Subajah Biography

Subajah is a multi-talented reggae artist known for his deep spiritual and social consciousness, reflected in both his music and his life. Originally from France, Subajah’s musical journey began early, deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of Africa and the Caribbean. His exposure to these traditions played a significant role in shaping his sound, which is a unique blend of reggae, rap, and acoustic.

Subajah’s introduction to the music world began as a rapper in France at the young age of 13. He quickly made a name for himself, collaborating with established French rappers, including his mentor, Fredy K from the renowned group ATK. His early experiences in rap provided him with a solid foundation in lyricism and rhythm, but his passion for deeper, more spiritual themes drew him towards reggae.

In 2007, Subajah relocated to London, a move that would be key for his musical career now. London’s diverse music scene provided him with the perfect environment to refine his sound and expand his artistic skills. It was here that Subajah co-founded the Subajah Family. This collective allowed Subajah to experiment with different musical styles, blending traditional reggae with the influences of his African roots and his background in rap.

Subajah’s music stands out for its spiritual depth and its emphasis on themes of love, unity, and social justice. His voice, often described as soulful and uplifting, carries a unique emotional resonance that connects with audiences on a spiritual level. His songs are powerful messages that make listeners think about their lives and the world.

This project gave him his place in the reggae world as an artist who could blend traditional sounds with modern influences to create something truly unique.

In 2017, the album Architect gained him a lot of attention from all over the world. The album, which showcases authentic roots and dub at its best, is still relevant today because of its timeless lyrics and authentic production. Released on CD and available in the Pauzeradio vinyl shop, this album purveyed the artist’s talent and growth.

More recently, he released his album Lion. Mr. Topple from Pauzeradio described it as “a strong, expertly constructed, and engaging affair.” The conscious tracks are thought-provoking and musically evocative; the Lovers Rock cuts are pleasing and enjoyable, and the finales of Cornerstone and Lioness are welcome inclusions, particularly the former, which is utterly spellbinding. Subajah has created a solid and inspired body of work—one that showcases his skill brilliantly.”

In addition to his studio work, he is known for his powerful live performances. He has performed at some of London’s most iconic venues, such as Electric Brixton and Hootananny, as well as graced the stages of major international festivals like Rototom Sunsplash and One Love Festival.

Throughout his career, Subajah has collaborated with numerous reggae legends, including Aswad, Twinkle Brothers, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and Dawn Penn. These collaborations have not only broadened his musical scope but have also helped to hold his place within the global reggae community.
