Jah Nyne – Holdin A Vibe – Review

After producing the Unique Reggae Mix Show over the past 6 years, one thing I have noticed is that there is many great artists that go underrated. This has been and is the case for Jah Nyne. Hailing from Freeport, Bahamas Jah Nyne has been and is a regular feature in the radio shows since 2007. Better known for hits like “In The Name Of Jah” and “Spread Some Love” amongst many, Jah Nyne does not fail to deliver another action packed album that is known as “Holdin A Vibe”

Right from the start this album shows a huge development not just in the vocal talents of Jah Nyne but also the production and quality of his music, which has grown tremendously. “Holdin A Vibe” the title song to the album, is smooth and mellow, laid back roots riddim and the song leads with a positive spiritual message, this song is not just musical but has a flow to it that sets us up for the journey we are about to take with listening to this album.

“How Do You Feel” steps up the pace, which is on the Mirror riddim. Another huge tune with an important message covering world issues. Jah Nyne’s vocals draw in our ear and delivers a serious message to those that are killing, this is a deep song and should be featured on more radio stations worldwide. “Hungry Pickney” on the Golden riddim again another very well produced track. The vocals have a punch bringing more important issues that the whole world is facing right now. Where as the riddim is from no other than Goldcup records with yet another quality piece of work in itself.

“I’ll Treasure You” Shows us the loving side of Jah Nyne, with velvet like vocals. This is a message to the ladies. A Definate hit with the unforgettable, sweet, distinct vocals and the catchy riddim will have you swaying. This is a Big tune and shows us that he has diversity. “Jah Bless Us” is another positive tune, again that is very well produced. Its good to see such quality and passion going into one album.

“Peace And Love” takes us down a notch, featuring Ras Ijah this song vocally delivers a solid combination. Jah Nyne and Ras Ijah have a totally opposite sound so this combo works great and is followed with solid production, not just on vocals but on with “Ready Right Now” riddim played really tightly by Ambassa. “Rise” picks up the pace again with a tough fire tune, burning down the system, hailing jah to see us through these rough times of struggle.

“Shoulder To The Wheel” offers an uplifting sound and vocal, with the skills of The Magista on the riddim, making for a musical, roots feel. The flow of Jah Nyne’s vocals are very catchy and really easy to learn to sing along. This song is not just very uplifting, the vocals also stay in your head. “Take Control” featured on the Eternal riddim has been a regular feature in the Unique Reggae Mix Show and very popular, as like many songs from this new album “Holdin A Vibe” The bouncy and bright well played riddim works hand in hand with the vocals and are very pleasing to the ear.

“Unity Is Strength” on the amazing Splashback riddim played by the mighty Ambassa features another talented artist from the Bahamas, Peter Runks. This laid back classical roots reggae riddim is one of the most musical riddims i have heard this year and is a great example of quality music. The combo of the two singers again makes for a great sound with Jah Nyne and Peter Runks sounds being so uniquely different.

Rounding up this journey of “Holdin A Vibe” we have possibly one of my favourite songs from this album which is “Zion I” on the Keep It Clean riddim. This song is another popular feature for the Unique Reggae Mix. Opening up the listeners ears to absorb the teachings offered to us in the words of Jah Nyne from life experiences. Its safe to say that this album oozes quality from the first song right to the last song. Very hard to pick a top 5 songs but here are mine:

  1. Zion I
  2. I’ll Treasure You
  3. Unity Is Strength feat Peter Runks
  4. Holdin A Vibe
  5. Peace And Love feat Ras Ijah

To summarise this album in a paragraph. I have to say this is another great album for 2012/2013. It is very well produced and covers the full Reggae, Roots, Lovers spectrum. I think that the combination of Jah Nyne, Goldcup Records, Culture Shock, Ambassa and all involved in this project makes this a hit no doubt. It has tight production and riddims with solid vocals and important spiritual and life messages. Another must not just for Radio selecta’s world wide but for everyone that loves to be uplifted by great Reggae music.
