10/10/2026By Gav Pauze

Formed in 2003 on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, The Lambsbread are a roots reggae group founded by vocalists Kaya and Nadia Rathje. Known for their conscious lyrics, traditional reggae rhythms and messages of love and unity, the group have developed an international following while remaining closely connected to their Rastafari beliefs.

Their musical journey began when Kaya and Nadia met on Kauai, sharing a passion for reggae and the teachings of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I. Together, they began writing and recording original music, releasing their debut single Love In The House through Zion High Productions.

The recording appeared on the Liberation Riddim alongside established Jamaican artists including Capleton, Yami Bolo, Turbulence and Lutan Fyah. Its release on Jamaican 7-inch vinyl introduced The Lambsbread to an international audience, gaining support from radio stations and sound systems.

Early Albums and Jamaican Connections

Following their early success, The Lambsbread established a working relationship with Zion High producers Elliot Lieb and David 'Jah D' Goldfine. Recording sessions in California contributed to their debut album Sing Praise, which laid the foundations for their distinctive roots reggae sound.

Their growing connections brought opportunities to work with respected artists and producers. The collaboration Mountain Top, featuring Prezident Brown, received international attention, while recordings with Lutan Fyah and Ras Attitude further strengthened their catalogue.

These included Struggle featuring Lutan Fyah and Teach Dem featuring Ras Attitude, both appearing on their 2006 album Salvation. The project combined spiritually influenced songwriting with productions from Zion High and Lustre Kings.

Their third album, Rise, followed in 2008, featuring contributions from musicians including Nelson Miller and Devon Bradshaw. During this period, the group toured extensively throughout Hawaii and the United States, building their reputation as a live roots reggae band.

Bring Them Together

After relocating to Maui in 2013, Kaya and Nadia continued developing their music, releasing Bring Them Together in 2014. The album featured Stand Firm with Prezident Brown and Strong Rock featuring Perfect Giddimani and Fantan Mojah.

Other recordings included Right Ting, Live It Up Again and Keep It Blazing, demonstrating their ability to combine uplifting messages with powerful reggae productions.

In 2017, The Lambsbread released their fifth album, World Needs Love, featuring collaborations with Jamaican reggae artists Sizzla on Roots & Culture and Morgan Heritage on Feel The Vibes.

The album reinforced their commitment to conscious reggae, exploring themes of spirituality, unity and the social challenges facing communities worldwide.

Keeping Reggae in the Family

One of the most distinctive aspects of The Lambsbread is their development into a family band. Kaya and Nadia's sons, Samuel Levi and Jacob Selassie, became an important part of the group's musical direction, contributing drums, keyboards, production and recording expertise.

Both began performing professionally at a young age, gaining experience alongside musicians including Christopher Meredith, who worked with Stephen and Ziggy Marley, and Ras Bonitto, guitarist for Bunny Wailer.

The family connection became increasingly important as The Lambsbread continued recording and developing their own productions, maintaining the traditional roots sound that defined their earlier recordings.

Show Love and Recent Music

In 2020, The Lambsbread released Lockdown, a socially conscious recording addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside Nah Stop Chant, their collaboration with Mykal Rose. Both recordings received reviews on Pauzeradio, continuing the station's coverage of the group's music.

Their sixth studio album, Show Love, followed in 2021, featuring collaborations with Mykal Rose, Anthony B and Richie Spice, alongside production contributions from Samuel and Jacob Rathje.

Further recordings included Stay Free in 2023 and Warmonger in June 2024. Produced by Samuel Rathje, Warmonger addressed global conflict, political corruption and the devastating effects of warfare. In May 2026, a new lyric video was released for Smile, their collaboration with Richie Spice from Show Love.

A Family Dedicated to Roots Reggae

More than two decades after forming on Kauai, The Lambsbread continue to represent Hawaiian roots reggae through their combination of family musicianship, Rastafari teachings and conscious songwriting.

Having worked with respected artists including Prezident Brown, Lutan Fyah, Sizzla, Morgan Heritage, Anthony B and Richie Spice, their catalogue reflects a longstanding connection with the international reggae community. From Love In The House to their more recent productions, The Lambsbread have remained committed to spreading messages of love, unity, spirituality and positive change through reggae music.
