Clinton Sly

10/5/2026By Gav Pauze

Clinton Sly grew up around the beats and rhythms of reggae and Caribbean music from an early age, building a foundation that would shape both his writing and his distinctive vocal delivery. Beginning to write and perform during his teenage years, he developed a rugged, instantly recognisable style capable of moving comfortably between reggae, dub, dancehall and the heavier edges of modern bass music.

Based in Montreal, Canada, Clinton has spent much of his career refusing to stay within a single musical lane. His roots remain firmly connected to reggae and sound systems, but collaboration has allowed him to take that influence into dub, jungle, drum & bass, dubstep and other electronic styles. It is an approach that has made his voice known to audiences way beyond the reggae scene.

Building an International Catalogue

His catalogue stretches back more than a decade. Early releases included Wheel N’ Come Again, followed by collaborations that quickly demonstrated his willingness to experiment. In 2012, Clinton appeared with Portuguese electronic group Karetus on “Wicked”, bringing his reggae-influenced vocal style into a heavier bass-driven environment.

That crossover became an important part of his musical identity. Working with producers and collectives including Seed Organization, Pull-Up Selecta, Blend Mishkin, DJ Tzinas and The Dirty Dubsters, Clinton established links across Europe while continuing to build from his Caribbean musical foundations. His work with DJ Tzinas produced “Real Good Gal”, while the Ready Remixed project saw his vocals reworked across steppers, dub, jungle and dancehall by a collection of producers including FLeCK, Variedub and Seed Organization.

Vinyl and Sound System Culture

Vinyl and sound system culture have also remained a very important part of Clinton’s journey. “Straight To Mi Brain”, produced alongside The Illuminated, Distant Roots and Grand Ancestor, was issued as a limited hand-stamped 7-inch vinyl, while “Boom Tune”, produced by Bukkha and released through Tuff Scout, further connected his music with the international dub and sound system scenes.

His collaborations have frequently crossed borders as well as genres. “Soundsystem” with Champion Sound brought together production from Moscow, vocals recorded in Canada, mastering in the UK and a release through Dub & Roll Records. Clinton has also worked with artists including Dub Terminator, Jinx in Dub, Akcept, Frenk Dublin and Krak in Dub, continually finding new avenues for his distinctive voice.

Crossing Into Bass Music

The electronic bass world has been another major part of that development. Collaborations with Dirt Monkey, Phocust and Karetus have placed Clinton’s vocals over dubstep, drum & bass and bass-heavy electronic production, showing how naturally his sound can move between reggae tradition and modern club music.

Tracks such as Dirt Monkey’s “Full Peel” and his work with Phocust introduced him to another generation of listeners while retaining the vocal character that runs throughout his catalogue.

Still Moving Forward

Clinton has continued releasing and collaborating into the 2020s, including “Good Vibes We Bring” with Frenk Dublin, “Fresh & Clean” with Giga Beat and further work with Phocust. Rather than treating reggae and electronic music as separate worlds, he continues to use the common ground between them: bass, rhythm, energy and sound system culture.

From Montreal to Europe and beyond, Clinton Sly’s catalogue reflects an artist shaped by reggae but never boxed in by it. His ability to move between roots-driven beats and contemporary bass sounds has become one of the defining qualities of his work, keeping collaboration and musical exploration at the centre of everything he does.
