Perfect Giddimani has been a regular and popular feature on the Unique Reggae Mix Show since the programme began in 2006, so when I was sent his new album, Journey Of 1000 Miles, my expectations were already high.

From the opening title track, it is clear that Perfect is maintaining the standard of his previous releases. My immediate reaction is that this is exactly the kind of Reggae I want to hear: positive and uplifting, with Perfect’s distinctive and dynamic vocal style at the centre of it.

Roots For Me has already featured on the Unique Reggae Mix Show and received a strong response from listeners. It is one of those tracks that immediately connects, the kind of tune that makes the hairs on your arms and the back of your neck stand up.

One of my personal favourites on the album is One Week. The lyrical content stands out, but so does Perfect’s vocal performance. There is an adventurous quality to the singing, delivered naturally without the obvious Auto-Tune that has become increasingly common. Combined with the lively riddim, it gives the track real strength and energy.

Rain Fall shows another side of Perfect. His delivery is smoother and softer here, demonstrating the range behind an artist who, for me, is one of the most consistent Reggae performers of 2012.

If I had to choose a top three from the album, it would be:

  1. One Week

  2. Journey Of 1000 Miles

  3. Roots For Me

Those choices naturally reflect the kind of music I feature on the Unique Reggae Mix Show, and narrowing the album down to three tracks is difficult.

Across the album, Perfect moves through Roots and Reggae while also drawing on Dancehall and Hip Hop influences. That variety gives Journey Of 1000 Miles a broad sound without losing Perfect’s identity.

The strength of the album comes from its combination of lyrical content, strong production and consistently confident performances. There is a positive energy running through the record, but it never feels lightweight.

For me, Journey Of 1000 Miles is one of the strongest Reggae albums I have heard in 2012 and easily ranks among my top three albums of the year.

If I had to sum it up simply: solid, clean, uplifting and spiritually conscious Reggae music, delivered to a very high standard.
