Lutan Fyah Biography:

Born Anthony Martin on December 4, 1975, in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Lutan Fyah is a Jamaican musician, singer, and member of the Rastafari movement Bobo Shanti. His childhood was full of Jamaica’s cultural richness; music filled every aspect of life. Growing up in the Caribbean, he soaked up the sounds of roots and dancehall, as well as the consciousness that filled reggae at the time.

Lutan Fyah’s musical journey began in his teenage years, when he started performing at local events and talent shows. Influenced by reggae legends such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Burning Spear, he honed his craft and developed a distinct vocal style that blended melodious singing with powerful chanting.

First recordings
Fyah’s first songs were recorded for Buju Banton‘s Gargamel Records in 1999 and his first two albums were released by Minor 7 Flat 5 and Lustre Kings, leading to Lutan Fyah being a guest artist on albums by Luciano and Turbulence. In 2004, Minor 7 Flat 5 released his debut album, “Dem No Know Demself,” showcasing his lyrical greatness and giving him a place in reggae. Songs like “Ungrateful” and “Jail” resonated with people, addressing social issues and advocating for positive change.

Then the release of “Phantom War” (2006), “Healthy Lifestyle” (2006), and “You Bring Blessings” (2007) really proved his consistency to be unmatched in the modern era of roots reggae.

Evolution
Throughout his career, Lutan Fyah has continued to evolve as an artist, experimenting with different musical styles while staying true to his roots. His back catalogue includes a diverse range of albums, including “Time and Place” (2005), his second album on the Lustre Kings label, “Life of a King” (2013), and “Music Never Dies” (2017), each offering a very unique mix of reggae, dancehall, and conscious lyrics.

As well as his music, Lutan Fyah is known for being outspoken on social and political issues, which feed into his music. His songs address poverty, inequality, and corruption. He uses his voice to push for justice and equality, earning him respect not only as a musician but also as a social commentator.

The Torchbearer
Lutan Fyah’s impact extends beyond his solo work, as he has collaborated with many artists from different genres. From collaborations with reggae legends like Capleton and Luciano to unexpected pairings with hip-hop and electronic producers, covering songs by Dr. Dre and The Fugees, has shown his versatility and that he is not afraid to step out of the reggae box.
