Delus Biography:

Delmark “Delus” Spence was a Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist who made a huge impact on the scene before his untimely death. Born on June 18, 1981, in Kingston, Jamaica, Delus grew up surrounded by music, his father was a musician and his mother a singer. This early exposure to music laid the foundation for Delus’s future career in the industry.

Looking up to entertainers such as Buju Banton, Spragga Benz, and Beres Hammond, it was not until after leaving Morant Bay High School that he decided to try and get a full understanding of his love, which was music. He started visiting a number of studios, mainly Lincoln “Suga” Minnott’s Youth Man Promotion/Black Roots Studio. Although he did not record during those times, he experienced the studio environment.

Delus began his musical journey in the early 2000s, when he started to gain recognition in the Jamaican music scene. He initially gained attention for his distinctive style and powerful lyrical delivery. Drawing inspiration from his upbringing in Kingston and his experiences growing up in Jamaica, Delus’s music often addressed social issues, love, and personal struggles.

In 2005, Delus, along with his brother Konshens, formed the musical duo Sojah. Together, they released a number of tracks that got attention from the dancehall community. Their collaboration showcased their artist synergy and ability to blend various musical influences, including reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop.

Delus’s solo career began to flourish in the late 2000s, with the release of his debut album “Fully Loaded” in 2009. The album was a combination of high energy dancehall anthems and introspective tunes that showcased Delus’s versatility as an artist. The tracks “What Tomorrow May Bring” and “Ghetto Pain” resonated with listeners, this earned Delus a lot of praise and further cemented his place in the reggae and dancehall scene.

In his career, Delus collaborated with artists locally as well as internationally, this included collaborations with artists like Vybz Kartel, Mavado, and Bounty Killer. This helped expand his reach and pushed his music to a much broader audience.

He was not just musically inclined, he also showed interest in video graphing. He had shot and edited music videos for artists like Bescenta and Warrior King, medleys, like the medley with D’ Angel, Mr. Peppa, Delly Ranx, Sojah and Spragga Benz on the Womba Riddim, and also videos for some young, upcoming artists.

In addition to his musical endeavours, Delus was also known for his philanthropic work. He frequently participated in charity events and used his platform to raise awareness about social issues affecting his community. Delus’s commitment to giving back to his community reflected his genuine desire to make a positive impact beyond the music industry.

Despite his achievements, Delus had personal challenges, including mental health issues. These struggles frequently appeared in his music, bringing depth and realism. Delus was very upfront about his issues, utilising his platform to promote mental health awareness and encourage others to seek treatment when necessary.

Delus’ life was tragically cut short on June 22, 2016, aged 34. His death sent huge shockwaves through the dancehall community, with fans and artists mourning his loss. Delus’ legacy lives on through his music though, which continues to inspire and encourage audiences worldwide.

Delmark “Delus” Spence was more than just a reggae artist; he was a passionate singer and performer, a dedicated activist, and a voice for the people. Many were touched by his music, which has had a long-lasting impact on the reggae and dancehall scenes. Even though he is sadly no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the music he has left behind.
