Uwe Banton is a German reggae artist known for his distinctive style, conscious lyrics, and captivating performances. Born on November 28, 1965, in Bielefeld, Germany, his birth name is Uwe Schäfer. His stage name “Banton” was given to him by his Jamaican comrades when he started DJing in clubs from around 1984. At that time “Burro Banton” was a very popular DJ in Jamaica and in the UK there was Pato Banton, so “Banton” was a very popular name attached to an artist’s name who was DJing.

Early Years and Musical Influences
Growing up in Germany, Banton was exposed to various musical genres, but it was reggae music that resonated with him the most. He was drawn to the genre’s fusion of soulful melodies, rhythmic beats, and thought-provoking lyrics. Inspired by reggae legends like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller and Burning Spear, Banton found himself gravitating towards the genre as a means of expressing his own thoughts and experiences.

Musical Career Beginnings
Banton’s musical journey officially began in the mid 1980s when he started performing at local clubs and events in Germany. He gained recognition for his soulful voice, engaging stage presence, and thought-provoking lyrics that tackled social issues such as inequality, injustice, and environmental concerns. His early performances garnered attention within the German reggae scene, paving the way for his eventual rise to prominence.

Breakthrough Album and Recognition
After already having released various albums (“One Earth” – 1996, “Rastaman” – 1998, “His Majesty’s Works” – 2003) with his then band “Movements”, Banton released his debut album, “JAH Roots” in 2006 which received widespread acclaim within the reggae community. The title track “JAH Roots” and tracks like “Kommt, Seht, Hört” (feat. Ganjaman) and “Don’t Cry” showcased his ability to address pressing social issues while maintaining a catchy, infectious sound.

Continued Success and Evolution
Throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s, Banton continued to solidify his place in the reggae music scene, releasing several successful albums and performing at festivals and concerts across Europe and beyond. His sophomore album, “Rightful Place” (2009), further established him as a leading voice in conscious reggae music. Tracks like “Race” and “Love Reggae” exemplified his commitment to spreading messages of peace, love, and unity through his music.

In 2012, Banton released “Mental War” which features widely acclaimed songs such as “Education” and “Ithiopian Ites” and also collaborations with diverse artists such as Luciano and Mikey General. While appealing to a broader audience, he proved to be staying true to his roots.

In 2021 and featured a lot here on Pauzeradio, Banton released via the RastaYard Records label an 18 track album, “Free Your Mind,” featuring songs like “Speak The Truth,”  “Keep On Learning” and the title track “Free Your Mind,” all gaining huge support from all over the world. The album also featured a varied selection of dub versions. The entire album showcased his consistency and timeless content, stabilising him as an influential roots artist of our time.

Another notable release that came out in 2022 was the single and dub to match “The People Need To Be Free,” released via the Ancient Mountain label on a 7″ vinyl. Mr Topple from Pauzeradio described it as “The People Need To Be Free is a joy from Banton. The track is a very pleasing and detailed composition; lyrically it provides a rallying-cry for all of us and it would be a superb addition to anyone’s collection. Strong works.”

Social Activism and Humanitarian Work
Beyond his music, Banton has been actively involved in various social and humanitarian causes. He has used his platform to raise awareness about issues such as poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability.
