Brother Culture Biography:

Brother Culture, born Simon Fajemisin, is known for his conscious lyrics, charismatic stage presence, and his commitment to spreading positive messages through music. His journey from his career beginnings in London to being known internationally just shows his talent, resilience, and passion for reggae.

Born in the late 1960s in London, England, to Jamaican parents, they instilled in him a deep appreciation for reggae. Growing up in a multicultural area exposed him to a range of genres, but it was reggae that really captured his heart. Influenced by the likes of Bob Marley, Burning Spear and Culture, he began to explore the London reggae scene, attending shows, sound system and dancehall events.

In the late 1980s, Simon Fajemisin adopted the stage name Brother Culture, inspired by his desire to promote unity, brotherhood, and consciousness through his music. He began his career as a DJ and MC, performing on sound systems across London and gaining a reputation for his performances and lyrical flow. His unique style, which mixes elements of roots reggae, dub, and dancehall, quickly got a lot of attention within the reggae community and beyond.

Working with Jah Revelation Muzik sound system and as part of the Twelve Tribes of Israel Rasta Brotherhood, Culture toured in the USA, the Caribbean and Canada throughout the 1980s.

Musical path
Brother Culture’s musical career gained momentum in the 1990s as he collaborated with various reggae producers and artists, including Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor, and Mungo’s Hi Fi. His debut album, “Isis” (1996), showcased his lyrical depth, earning him respect and establishing him as a rising star on the reggae scene. Brother Culture’s other releases, including “Code Name” (2000) and “Good Things” (2007), further built his reputation as a prolific and versatile artist, capable of delivering powerful messages over infectious reggae beats.

In 2015, he joined forces with Roots Garden Records and Manasseh; they released a number of singles and an album, including the LP “All A We,” which continued to prove Culture’s greatness. Over the last few years and now in 2023, Culture, in collaboration with Little Lion Sound, released the 40-year anniversary album on the Evidence Music label, more proof of the consistency that he maintains with every track he releases. During his career, Brother Culture has collaborated with an impressive range of musicians from around the world, breaking down cultural barriers. His collaborations with international artists such as Asian Dub Foundation, Dub FX, and Gentleman have helped to broaden reggae’s global appeal and introduce his distinctive sound to many new audiences. His live performances are filled with energy, which has taken him to stages around Europe, North America and far beyond, certainly a great ambassador for reggae.

As well as his musical journey, he is a strong and vocal advocate for justice, human rights, and the environment, addressing issues such as racial inequality, economic disparity, and climate change through his music. If he’s performing at concerts, participating in community events, or collaborating with organisations, Brother Culture remains committed to using his voice to help work towards a better society.
