Uwe Banton Biography:

Uwe Banton is a German reggae artist known for his unique style, conscious lyrics, and captivating performances. Born on November 28, 1965, in Bielefeld, Germany, born Uwe Schäfer. His Jamaican friends gave him the stage name “Banton” when he began DJing in clubs around 1984. During that period, “Burro Banton” was a highly renowned DJ in Jamaica, and in the UK, Pato Banton was also a well-known DJ, making “Banton” an extremely popular name associated with an artist who was DJing.

Musical influences and early years
While growing up in Germany, Banton encountered a variety of musical genres, but reggae music struck a deep chord with him. The melodies, riddims, and conscious lyrics caught his attention. Reggae legends such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, and Burning Spear inspired him, drawing him towards roots to express his own thoughts and life experiences.

His musical journey started during the mid-1980s by performing at local clubs, events and festivals in Germany. He became known for his powerful voice, engaging stage presence, and thought-provoking lyrics, those lyrics focused on inequality, injustice, and environmental causes. His early performances gained attention from the German reggae scene, paving the way for his eventual rise.

Breakthrough
After already having released various albums (“One Earth” in 1996, “Rastaman” in 1998, “His Majesty’s Works” in 2003) with his then band “Movements,” Banton released his debut album, “JAH Roots” in 2006, which received widespread acclaim within the reggae community. The title track “JAH Roots,” as well as “Kommt, Seht, Hört” feat. Ganjaman, and “Don’t Cry,” showcased his ability to create incredible roots music.

Continued Success
Throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s, Banton continued to firm his place in reggae, releasing several successful albums and performing at festivals and shows across Europe and abroad. His sophomore album, “Rightful Place” (2009), established him further as a leading voice in conscious reggae. Tracks like “Race” and “Love Reggae” showed his commitment to spreading messages of peace, love, and unity through his music.

In 2012, Banton released the album “Mental War,” which featured songs “Education” and “Ithiopian Ites,” as well as collaborations with reggae legends Luciano and Mikey General. While appealing to a wider audience, he proved to be staying true to his roots.

In 2021 and featured a lot here on Pauzeradio, Banton released via the RastaYard Records label an 18 track album, “Free Your Mind,” featuring songs like “Speak The Truth,” “Keep On Learning,” and the title track “Free Your Mind,” all gaining huge support from all over the world. The album also featured a varied selection of dub versions available in the Pauzeradio shop. The entire album showcased his consistency and timeless content, solidifying his status as an influential roots artist of our time.

Another solid release that came out in 2022 was the single and dub to match “The People Need To Be Free,” released on the Ancient Mountain label as a 7″ vinyl.

Mr Topple from Pauzeradio described it as “The People Need To Be Free is a joy from Banton. The track is a very pleasing and detailed composition; lyrically, it provides a rallying-cry for all of us, and it would be a superb addition to anyone’s collection.”

Social Activism
Beyond his music, Banton has been actively involved in various social and humanitarian causes. He has used his platforms to raise awareness about issues regarding poverty, inequality, and the environment. Through concerts, charity events, and collaborations with non-profit organisations, Banton has shown his commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
