Jesse Royal Biography

Jesse Royal, born Jesse David Leroi Grey, emerged as one of Jamaica’s most promising reggae artists, renowned for his unique sound blending traditional roots reggae with modern influences. He was born on April 29, 1989, in St. James Parish, Jamaica, to a family steeped in Maroon ancestry and with Rastafarian faith.

The Royal family relocated to Kingston in 1997 where his father started a job with a communications company. When in school Royal became friends with Ziggy Marleys son, Daniel Bambata Marley. His musical journey began during his formative years, when he started experimenting with songwriting and performing and he was mentored by the late Fatis Burrell.

The Rise
Jesse Royal gained recognition with the release of his debut single, “Singing the Blues,” in 2010. The song gained attention, showcasing his powerful vocals and insightful lyrics. His first breakthrough moment came with the release of “Modern Day Judas,” a powerful track covering societal injustices and moral decay, which really resonated with audiences both in Jamaica and internationally. The track thrusted him into the spotlight and earned him the title of a conscious artist.

Following “Modern Day Judas,” he continued to make moves in reggae. In 2014, he released his debut EP, “This Is Jesse Royal,” which received great reviews for its refreshing mix of traditional sounds and modern production.
