JayRyme and Hyh Volume – Money Outta Pocket Review

JayRyme and Hyh Volume: Money Outta Pocket Single Review by Mr Topple for Pauzeradio.com.

Summer may be nearly over in the northern hemisphere, but that doesn’t mean the summery music has to end. And a new track from a brand-new label will help you slide into fall perfectly.

Money Outta Pocket, released via new label More Than Music Productions, is the first release off the brand-new Pocket Money Riddim – with further tracks set to be released soon. More Than Music is a new venture, that will bring together producers, engineers, publishers, musicians, bookers, promoters, and all other music professionals under one banner for the culture.

This debut offering, featuring the talents of JayRyme and Hyh Volume, is creating a great first impression – with keyboards from David Malyjurek and the bass, drums, and guitar from Robert Edward Wheeler III. Produced by Anotha One Productions and co-produced by Sechs9Studios (who were responsible for the recent hit Skank Pan Repeat), Money Outta Pocket is a slick and winding affair.

It’s a traditional Reggae track in every sense – with keys running that choppy bubble rhythm, drums on a kind-of one drop, and the bass deep and rounded, winding around the track. The horn arrangement is particularly nice, serving as a backing vocal at times while jutting in and out in call and response patterns at others. The composition itself is mean and moody in a minor key and has been arranged to create a dark and brooding atmosphere while still running at a decent pace. Money Outta Pocket winds well and the track is a crisp and tidy cut.

So, what of the vocals? Well, JayRyme and Hyh Volume are completely different artists – which, when they’re put together, works well.

JayRyme has a mid-range, tighter, and more gravelly voice, while Hyh Volume is more rounded, soulful, and nasal – but higher up in terms of pitch, including a nice falsetto. So, they blend perfectly together. JayRyme’s verses show some nice singjay – with interesting rhythms and some good moves across his vocal register. Hyh Volume takes on the choruses and gives us a memorable melody as he moves around his versatile register with good attention to detail on his dynamics.

The pair have also given us some interesting lyrical content about how everything, and everyone, has a price under Babylon – and how people value cash over conscience, not least in personal relationships with women. But there’s a broader narrative about how, as a species, we’ve lost our way under a system that prioritises financial wealth and success over us as people.

Overall, Money Outta Pocket is a slick and clean affair, a solid track that bodes well for the rest of the riddim.
